I think, therefore I write

Quota needed?

I often wonder,why we need to have reservations for admissions in colleges.This has been a topic in many of the group discussions and debates and still there’s nothing that has happened. If a student has the talent,he will study well.Why reservations? These reservations were made during Ambedkar’s times for good causes. Now all those causes having died,the election benefactor reservation alone remains behind.It’s such a pity that many really talented people don’t get what they are entitled to,because of this.I got this college and course with a not-much cut-off of 276.something because of my quota reservation.My friend who was 277.something couldn’t even come near my college because he was categorized as forward class. At that time,I was not actually aware of this affecting so many people.Even if I had known,there wouldn’t have been much that I could have done.This reservation stuff and management seats in colleges and making education a business is disgusting.I feel there is no need for a student to buy his/her admission into college if he/she is really very interested in studying and hence no need for these reservations. Also,I think those who study just for the sake of completing UG,for the name of it don’t deserve the degree in the first place.Also it leads to the rapidly increasing number of engineering colleges in the state.When do we see a change? The question is hanging in mid-air.

    Reservation is ok as long as it is based on Economic status. But Caste-based system shud be done away with. But there is a small matter of ‘Vote-bank’ politics and hence it will remain a dream as well.

    We could abolish reservation if we have the same standard of education all over India. It is not so. People of urban areas have better chances than people in rural areas.If you have any doubts, check out Karamadai( a village near Coimbatore) Govt higher secondary school and another private school in the city. There are seven sections in tenth std alone ,in Karamadai school and there are atleast 5 students who know nothing about english(it is a tamil medium), even though they are in tenth class. Their principal is a worried man now.So as Siddharth said we could have the poverty line as the dividing line than the caste.In this matter we should appreciate Mayawati, Up CM, for bringing the poverty line as the dividing line than the caste.(this is the only good thing she has done though) 😉

    That’s what am saying. When these special reservations based on caste were made initially,the economic status of the people was the only factor kept in mind.However,now the reservation is no longer purely based on the financial position of the students.Even we can see incidents where they bribe the officers and obtain fake community certificates,income certificates etc.So,education remains a very profitable business,with the capital coming in from politicians.Little is there,that we can do.The only solution to this is the field of education should be taken away from the hands of politicians and businessman,which we is not gonna happen in the near future.:(

      My suggestion is, we can abolish all kinds of quota! we can have reservation for Govt schools! cos, everyone knows that, the standard of students, teaching is very low there(this is because most of the parents are not caring much about their children’s marks and not willing to question the teachers) and only rural area people, children from economically backward families are studying in those schools. If such reservation comes to existence, Middle class families, Teachers who are teaching in those govt. schools will also let their children to study in Govt. schools and if they find the standard of teaching is not upto the mark, then they will obviously question the teachers! If in a school, when all the students and parents are cared about the marks, then eventually the standard will increase!
      Reservation will serve its purpose!!!!!

        @Size:

        It WAS there in TN upto 2003 by the name “Rural Quota”. Do you know what happened? All the students including the highly privileged – joined the Govt schools and arranged for private tuitions. Result? The poor children who cannot afford private tuitions were doomed!!!

        That is why “Rural Quota” was withdrawn!!!

    Ya.. You keep finding solutions and people keep finding loopholes. Every single person should take the initiative to live and let live.

    @siddhu
    i’m not meaning Rural quota! i meant quota for govt schools! rural was abolished because, 25% quota for rural is too much. schools like SRV filed a case at supreme court and they got the stay order! . and irony is that “Ideal higher secondary school”, one of the top boarding schools in TN is located in the rural area! 😛
    do you think that the standards of Govt schools in cities are upto the mark? there is one more problem in applying that govt school quoto. it is literally equal to, the govt admitting “our (govt) schools are very weak in standards” , so they will never do it! ever!

      @Size

      No. What I meant is that, ur proposal will also meet the same fate as that of Rural Quota!!!

      And, top Boarding school in TN???? Yet another IBU but i am not complaining 😛

    @siddhu
    But if you feel, abolishing the quota is the only solution, then it will not take place in the near future (near future- in this context ,it is atleast 50 years)! , we can pray the god that atleast our grandsons and granddaughters get some standard education! ouch…. u r an atheist, i forgot that!
